About Me.
Hello! I'm Phoebe. I am currently based in Singapore where I am a PhD Candidate at Nanyang Technological University. My research topic focuses on the construction of language teacher identities of Singapore Sign Language (SgSL) instructors. It explores how language ideologies and ideologies of deafness impact identity. It also investigates how this influences teaching practices in the classroom. My other related interests include education pedagogy, multilingualism, the politics of language and linguistic justice.
Here are some information tidbits about me...
I have lived in three countries - Singapore, Australia and the USA.
I was born in Singapore and completed my primary and secondary schooling in Singapore. For my undergraduate studies, I majored in deaf education at Griffith University in Brisbane, Australia. Thereafter, I worked as a teacher of the deaf in both deaf schools and mainstream schools for a few years in Melbourne. In 2014, I went to Gallaudet University in Washington DC to study dual MAs in International Development and Linguistics. After that, I worked as a Linguistic Research Specialist for Deaf Bible Society in Arlington, Texas, from November 2018 to June 2020.
For leisure, I enjoy reading, writing, long hikes in nature, running, strength training, travelling, and catching up with family and friends.
