A wrench in my plans

Updated: Apr 18, 2023

What began as a persistent fever last Tuesday, resulted in a Covid positive test result two days later.

Covid test results on the morning of Thurs April 6, 2023

I had planned out my research work schedule for all of last week. The week actually started out very productive and I was pleased with my progress. However, since the onset of my fever, I haven't been able to get any work done because I subsequently got worse in the days that ensued. I also had to ask another teacher to cover my class last Thurs night.

I've been doing practically nothing but sleeping like a log most days. This includes today, although I had hoped to get some work done. I've achieved zilch.

It's a terribly wrong time to be sick because most students are having tests and examinations and it is grading time for teachers. I have had to put a pause on my grading of students' work.

I'm glad though that it has happened now instead of later, although I am aware that it is possible to contract the virus again within a short time. I'm praying it doesn't happen again and will take whatever precautionary measures I can.

As I type this, it is around 10pm. I feel better but not 100 percent. Still, I'm grateful to be on the mend. However, there are moments when I feel better and then I regress. I'm learning to re-frame how I think about this period, and take it as a sign that it is time to slow down and just rest.

When I wake up tomorrow, I hope that I'll be able to get a decent amount of work done for most of the day and the days to follow for the rest of this week because I have an impending deadline. I'm also hoping to be able to make it to campus on Thursday night so that I can be the invigilator for my students for their final test.

For now, sleep beckons.

Update as of Sun 16 April 2023..

Still sick.

I went to see the Dr to get an MC and she gave me an extended week off plus a memo indicating the symptoms I had since April 5. To date, I have a persistent cough and cold. I also feel fatigued easily after working or walking for a bit.

Dr took my blood test and said it is a bit low, but not dangerously low. This explains why I feel a tad dizzy whenever I take short walks. I don't know how many days I will take to fully recover, but I hope it'll be soon!

Monday 17 April 2023

I actually felt like crap last night. I woke up this morning feeling a lot better after taking the cough syrup the doctor prescribed me yesterday. I had the best sleep ever in the last 12 nights or so. The medicine knocked me out and I fell into a deep slumber for a good 5 hours. I finally feel like I am on the road to recovery and regaining my strength back. I think it will take a few more days to feel 100% well though. Hoping all goes smoothly and to feel myself again.
